Golf in Cairo
In 1997 the first of five new golf courses opened
around Cairo to complement two existing courses,
each more than a century old. The contrasts are
dramatic. One can play literally in the shadows of
the great pyramids of Giza or on an island in the
center of Cairo’s booming metropolis. Choose a
course with dramatic hilltop views and winding
fairways; try an oasis in the middle of the Sahara
desert; play next to an ultra-modern amusement park;
or, accept the challenge of a course built on
streams and ponds that run through 14 of the 18
holes. Pick one, or try them all.
Gezira Sporting Club ( Cairo )
This 111 year old, 70 par golf course was the first
in Egypt, and once also its best. Before the Nasser
era, it was an 18-hole course used only by British
nationals. In 1906, the club members requested from
the government to acquire the club, but were
refused. Instead, they were allowed to lease the
club for 60 years. In 1951 it was converted into a
public club and 9 of its 18 holes were lost to the
youth club. Fortunately, it is still possible to
play 18 holes with a bit of maneuvering
18 holes (played on 9 fairways), par 70, 5860 yards,
rating 68, three tees Annual memberships, daily golf
Pro shop, caddies, trolleys, driving range, club
rental Golf Pro and lessons.
